BRRRRR!

Bundle up everyone - it's getting cold out there!  We took advantage of the "warmer" weather on Tuesday and went sliding with the crazy carpets. Fun was had by all!  Please be sure to bring an extra pair of mittens and maybe even some socks to school just in case.

We wrote our letters to Santa and they have been mailed out. We are patiently waiting for him to write a letter back to the class. He is a busy guy! We have also been busy practising our song for the Christmas concert. We hope to see you there on Thursday, December 22nd at 1:00.

We are starting to explore 2D and 3D shapes. I have asked the students to tell you when they see examples of these shapes when they are out and about.

Friday is our Movie Night at St. Francis. I am looking forward to see you all there.  We read the story in class and are doing some writing activities to support that story. This is one of my favourite Christmas stories. We all need to BELIEVE!

Snow, Snow and more Snow..

We have lots of snow predicted for tomorrow so be sure to dress warm and maybe bring an extra pair of mittens/gloves and socks! I am hoping that the snow will leave a nice cushy and fluffy hill for us to use the crazy carpets this week!

We were busy last week, writing letters to Santa and doing various Christmas themed writing and math activities. In Math we worked on multiplication up to the 7 time tables, using a variety of different strategies to solve word problems and simple facts.

We received 5 cards from our Around the Globe Christmas card challenge. Some have come from North Carolina, Texas and New Jersey. In the end, we should receive 29 cards! We mailed 29 cards out this weekend.

The next two weeks will center around Christmas and celebrating the birth of baby Jesus. We welcomed our new student teacher from Ottawa U, Louise Trudeau for full afternoons. Miss Trudeau has an exciting art activity planned for this week. We can't tell you any more about it because it is a surprise!

On Wednesday our class participated in the Hour of Code. All students went home with a certificate that they were very proud to receive! Some worked with Dash and Dot, while others worked on Blocky coding Star Wars and Minecraft. Always a class favourite is Build with Chrome as well. This upcoming week  I will introduce "The Foos" app to the students. They are sure to love this one as well!

On Friday, we got the pleasure welcoming St. Peter's band who got the whole school into the Christmas spirit. Stay tuned for a fun week ahead.... All Aboard!

Light the Advent Candle Two..

We are into the second Sunday of Advent. A time where we reflect on Peace. Last week was very busy; our first Advent ceremony and a snow day! We are working on growing Mr. Grinch's heart a few sizes bigger each week. Classes from across the school will be adding hearts and their own examples of kindness throughout the Advent season. We are sure to grow his heart bigger by the end of December!

In Math, we worked hard on multiplication and made some gingerbread array houses.  The students recognize that multiplication is the same as repeated addition. They made groups of numbers and add them together!

In Language, we started to write letters to Santa asking if he could hire us to work at the North Pole (pictures to follow or come by the Rotunda to see all our hard work displayed!) The students wrote persuasive letters to Santa and are getting really good at convincing him to hire them! We will continue to work on Christmas themed spelling words and paragraphs and sentences throughout the month of December.

We wrapped up our Soils unit in Science and will have a little quiz on Thursday (Dec. 8th). I will send a little review sheet home tomorrow with the students.

In addition to the primary Advent celebrations, we will talk about the symbols and stories surrounding the Christmas story. We will be covering Bible stories that teach of God's love and forgiveness for all. We are looking forward to an amazing and cheerful December reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas.

This Christmas season, our students will be performing a Christmas song Thursday December 22nd during 3rd block. We will be practising throughout the month and can't wait to show off our skills! Formal invitations will be sent home soon! Please continue to check the Blog for updates as I will not be sending home a newsletter this month.
