Reading Bucket Challenge!

Students came home with the "Reading Bucket Challenge" this week. This is the home reading program that I would like them to follow. We spoke in class about how some of the bucket list items may not work for their family. I told them that they can be creative and change each bucket challenge that doesn't work for them. For example, if you can't "read under the stars" perhaps you can "read under a table, chair etc." (of course be safe too!). As long as the students are reading I want them to have fun with it! The first bucket challenge is due November 7th! Happy reading!

Phewwww we had such a busy day yesterday! Here are a few photos from our learning day!  I will be sending home the Bucket Challenge Reading program today! Please take a look for it in your child's bag. Yesterday I also sent home a Place Value Bingo card. The children had so much fun playing this game. It is NOT for homework but just a fun game to play with an adult or even a brother or sister. Have a great Tuesday!

Testing to see what apple will turn brown the quickest!
Will baking soda or lemon help?

Happy Monday morning everyone! We have a busy week ahead! Today we will be celebrating Johnny Appleseed's Birthday and most learning activities will involve apples in some way! We continue to learn how to be great writers and readers. I will be sending home a reading program this week. Please take a look for it in your child's bag  In Math, our focus continues to place value and we will work on reading, writing and expanding numbers in different ways. Last week we did a cool science experiment to introduce the scientific method. We will conduct another experiment this week so that we really understand what the scientific method process is. Thanks for all your support over the last month! Image result for johnny appleseed

Image result for OREO CookiesOn Monday, September 19th, we will have a special event to reinforce math skills in our classroom. This will be a chance for students to share and work as a team and then submit their results to a global project. The project is called the O.R.E.O. Project – which stands for Our Really Exciting Online Project – and is hosted by a teacher in Southern California. This will be her 17th year of hosting this project. Since 1999, students from every state in the US, almost every Canadian province, and several other countries have participated in this project and submitted their results online to share with each other.

Students will have 2 chances to stack as many Oreos as they can. (There are certain rules involved that will be explained when we host the project in our classroom.) After every participant has recorded their stack counts, we will take everyone’s highest count and average them together for ONE CLASS AVERAGE. Besides stacking Oreos, we will be using the cookies in math, science, art, language, and more!! If you wish to see more of this project, please visit http://theoppbj.weebly.com/. We are super excited to take part in this Global Challenge. Please be sure to take a look at our Blogs and Twitter to see how our students did!

Image result for dear studentsWow! Week 2 is upon us. I would like to thank everyone who has joined our class Remind app! It will allow me to send  quick announcements and reminders out to you very quickly. I have posted our September Curriculum News under "Newsletters". Each month I will post a quick snapshot of what we are learning or what we are about to learn for that month. I have had many questions about supplies. I will provide mostly everything that your children will need for school. Of course, ziploc bags and extra boxes of kleenex are always a welcome addition. As 21st Century Learners the children will, from time to time, be working on a variety of curriculum objectives (math, reading, writing, media literacy, music) through the use of I pads and Chromebooks. At times, headsets will be used to enhance independent learning and reduce noise distractions. If you prefer not to share, you may wish to send in a labelled headset for your child. A simple, inexpensive pair from the Dollar Store is sufficient.  Here's to a wonderful second week of school in grade 3! Please continue to check our twitter and blog regularly.

Tuesday 6 September 2016

What a great first day of grade 3! The students were anxious to meet their teacher (that's me!) and to be back at school with their friends again. Their classroom looks much different then from previous years. I have introduced flexible seating in Room 112. We will be discussing what this looks like (and sounds like) over the course of this week. Students now have different seating options throughout the day, and they decide which seat in our classroom will work best for their learning style. Students are not tied to sitting on a chair at a desk while they learn. We have yoga balls, milk crates, a standing desk (my favourite), mini rocking chairs, bean bag chairs and of course our learning carpets. Traditional seating options are  available and encouraged! Here are a few pictures of our classroom.
