Gym was wayyy too much fun today!

Gym was sooo much fun today! Thank you to Ms. Trudeau for making us sweat, get healthy and have fun at the same time. We had to catch the jewels, sweep the deck, be the Captain's daughter, be aware of a shark attack and show our muscles.

SO MUCH FUN!!

SO TIRED!

Skating Frenzy!

A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers and students for attending our annual skating trip to Ray Friel this year. We had a blast. It felt pretty funny walking out to the beautiful weather we had yesterday after being on the cold rink!

March Madness

I feel like I always start these post the same way... busy busy busy - but alas we are always busy while learning and having tons of fun in Grade 3A. Last week's highlight was hosting 9 teachers and principals from the Northern Superior School Board to showcase our school's Learning Commons and Makerspace. We teamed up with Mr. Boddy's class to show our guests just what an effective Learning Commons/Makerspace looks like. Our students showed our visitors how to run a Green Screen, Code Ozobots, Code Dash and Dot, build on our lego wall and cart and the students used our Invention Carts and Craft Carts. I am very proud of the students as they did a wonderful job in each of their respective centres. Our Fridays will most definitely continue including our Makerspace carts during our Library time!

In Language, we continued working on our rough copies of the Non-Fiction Reports. We have teamed up with our partners in Mrs. Whiting's class over the last two weeks to research and work on our rough copies. The students have been following the Writing Process (Brainstorm, Rough Draft, Edit, Revise and Publish. Most of the students are ready to begin their Google Slide Deck that they are able to access through their drive and the Hapara Workspace. There is a link to National Geographic Kids, the Rubric and the rough copies of the report that they are working on. The final copies will be done independently and not with a partner.

Thank you to all the students who have completed and shared the Writer's Briefcase thus far! Don't worry your time is coming soon if you have not yet had a chance to take it home.

We wrapped up our Money unit and wrote a little quiz on Friday. The quizzes will be returned this week. Please continue to challenge yourself when you're out and about shopping with your family. How much change will get? Can you estimate how much your total order will cost?  Some of our students have almost cracked the Case of the Sticky Bank Burglary - we've almost all caught the thief. Let's hope he returns all the money!

Today we started Perimeter and Area. I can foresee some construction sites in our near future! I wonder if we need to buy some hardhats!

We will wrap up our Forces and Motion Science unit this week! We have been having so much fun teaming up with Mrs. Whiting's class, learning about Magnetism, Gravity and Friction. It is most definitely a favourite part of our day.

Our Religion table is currently holding all of Lenten Prayer strips. I have asked the students that if there is something special they would like to share with the class to place on our Religion Table they are most welcome to bring it in. Perhaps they have a special rosary, bible or even a letter or card that means a lot to them.

Genius Hour will be worked on every Thursday afternoon, please start to bring in any materials that you will need to start working on you project at school. This Thursday we will continue to focus on the planning  and researching stage. Please remember that this a long and detailed project that may take longer than we expected! All part of the fun!

It's March!!!!!

Can you believe it is March? I certainly can't. I have no idea where the time is going. I told the children today that they were no longer just in grade 3 but half way to grade 4! The year is over halfway done already! Our March newsletter has been uploaded.

Image result for genius hourI am so excited that we have started our very first Genius Hour. The students are thrilled and all the proposals that have been handed in have been approved. We will start the research next week. I will be teaching them how to research and gather evidence to support their passion project. So much fun and so much learning to be done. We plan on sharing all of our projects and will host an open house for you to come and see all their hard work. Stay tuned for more details.

Last week we talked a lot of about "Random Acts of Kindness". We have decided as a class to do something nice for our local police officers. We have invited them into our class next week. They are always busy keeping our community safe and we think they deserve a little treat! As a class we brainstormed and decided that we would like to make the officers a big healthy fruit salad. A letter will be sent home with more detail as soon as we firm up a time and date. We will be asking the students to bring in some fruit if they are able to. Kindness is contagious; pass it on!!

Image result for fast pray giveWe had our Ash Wednesday liturgy this week to start our Lenten journey. The children have learned about the importance of FAST, PRAY, GIVE. They are very excited to participate in all the activities we will do as we lead up to Easter. We are preparing our hearts as we begin this important journey.

Math in Action!  We have been busy estimating how many objects fit into our snowman. We had some very rich math discussions about why estimation is so important in our daily lives!

Science in Action! Working with magnets! We discovered the differences between the north and south pole on magnets! We know that magnets can pass through water, styrofoam and glass!
